Amtrak - The California Zeypher route
Get off in Ottumwa or
Mt. Pleasant. 20-25 miles either way )
NOTE: Train is Always late traveling from the west !
I highly recommend getting on the
bottom level of a sleeping car
(the bottom level moves less, you will sleep better)
I Do not under any circumstances recommend trying
to sleep in a coach seat.
However if you do try this,
see us in the VPW office for a list of
good chiropractors in the area.

Located 22 miles west of Mount Pleasant
and 25 miles east of Ottumwa,Fairfield is
the county seat of Jefferson County.
Incorporated in 1847,Fairfield was home
to the first Iowa State Fair in 1854.
Fairfield and Jefferson County have many
points of interest to enjoy while in town.

Carnegie Library - The first library built in Iowa
and west of the Mississippi, it now houses
Indian Hills Jefferson Center and the Carnegie
Historical Museum. This library was the first
time Carnegie funded a library in a town
where he had no ties or investments.

McElhinny House - A well preserved example of
vernacular domestic structure, which was built
before 1850. It now houses the Fairfield Women's
Club. It is one of the 27 buildings in downtown
and the surrounding area that is on the
national historical register.

Maharishi University of Management - Offering a
unique approach to education. Fully accredited
traditional programs are taught in the light of the
inner experience gained through the practice of
Transcendental Meditation programs.
Regular scheduled tours of the university are available.

Bloomfield Cabin - One of the oldest standing
structures in the state, the 1838 log cabin was
relocated to Waterworks Park in 1908. It is the very
house in which Fairfield was named.

Johnny Clock Museum - Located just east of
Fairfield, it features dozens of hand-carved
clocks of native and exotic woods. Also located
in Lockridge one will find the New Sweden
Lutheran congregation, organized in 1884 at the
First Swedish Augustan Synod.

Places of Interest Outside of Fairfield:

Villages of Van Buren - Located straight south of
Fairfield on Highway 1, you will discover the treasures
of rural Iowa, rustic remnants from Iowa's Riverboat
era, woodland trails, the lazy Des Moines River and much more.

American Gothic House - Located in Eldon
this simple frame house, built in the
1880's, was made immortalized by
Iowan Grant Wood, when he photographed a
father and his daughter in front of the house.
The portrait is called the "American Gothic".

Exploritorium Of Iowa - In Ottumwa,
 discover Southern Iowa's most exciting
place to learn. This science and art center
is for the whole family with more than
60 hands-on exhibits including hurricane maker,
robot arm, bicycle generator, plasaphere and
veterinary display and much more.

Geode State Park - Located in Danville, the geode stone for which this park is
named brings "rock hounds" to the area in search of this elusive prize. The prime
attraction of this 1640-acre park is Lake Geode, a 186-acre lake built in 1950.
Over the years, the lake has become well known for excellent fishing for
largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, bullhead, red-eared sunfish
and tiger muskie.

Recreation Areas of Fairfield and Jefferson County:

Chautauqua Park - Shelter houses, restrooms, picnic and playground areas,
horseshoe courts and 9-hole disc golf course.

Waterworks Park - Fishing, picnicking, playground, shelter, restrooms and home of Bonnifield Cabin.

Roosevelt Recreation Center - Indoor pool, racquetball court, weights and exercise equipment. Guests of the Best Western Fairfield Inn can get free passes to the recreation center.

Fairfield Golf and Country Club - Private club 9-hole golf course, swimming pool, dining and lounge.

Walton Club - Scenic private club, 9-hole golf course overlooking Walton Lake, dining and lounge.
